The Project (also known as the fun part)

The Theme

The first activity is focused on identifying the musical theme for the project.

  • Students/artists download a music file and listen to Pachelbel's Canon in D Major.
  • Students/artists listen and identify the underlying rhythm and beat of the music.
  • Students/artistslisten and identify the melodies that follow the rhythm and beat.
  • Students/artists talk about how the music makes them feel

This version of Pachelbel's Canon in D Major was created by Gene Arnold form Siskiyou County, Califonia.

Gene broke Pachelbels' Canon down into five tracks- or parts- that he recorded using his guitar and Garageband sogftware.

Each track could stand alone, however, when combined the five tracks sound as if five different musicians are playing together. The piece grows as each track is added.

In order to hear this piece, you will need iTunes. This is a free download from Apple and runs on both PC and Apple computers.

  1. Download the "final version" of Gene's project. The recording is approximately six minutes long.
  2. Listen and see if you can identify the underlying rhythm and beat.
  3. Then listen and see if you can identify the four melodic tracks.
  4. Listen for the repetion.
  5. Listen to the piece more than once.
